“What will the place of women be in the world of tomorrow?” - Canon supports limited re-release of ‘WOMAN’ for #IWD2020

London, England, 5th March 2020: Canon Europe, together with Hope Production and partnersⁱ, has announced the limited European re-release of the 2019 Busan International Film Festival winning Audience Award for best film, WOMAN, by Anastasia Mikova and Yann Arthus-Bertrand, in celebration of International Women’s Day 2020 on March 8th.

Showing at select cinemas from Wednesday 4th March, WOMAN - the follow-up to renowned French filmmaker and Canon Ambassador Yann Arthus-Bertrand’s epic documentary, HUMAN – centres on intimate, first-person interviews of women shot in 50 countries around the world. The film sheds light on the injustice women face, while highlighting their inner strength and capacity to change the world despite these challenges. The documentary deals with topics such as motherhood, education, financial independence and sexuality.

Known for its natural aesthetic, WOMAN was made possible with the support of technology from Canon Europe, as part of its sponsorship of the project. Accumulating hundreds of hours of footage from 2000 interviews during the film’s three-year creation, Canon provided WOMAN’s production team with five Canon EOS C300 Mark IIs, five Canon EOS 5D Mark IVs, as well as a wide-range of lenses and accessories. Shot entirely in 4K or higher, the EOS C300 Mark II was coupled with an EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM lens for the film’s distinctively uniform interview format which clearly discerns the facial features, reflecting the naturalistic aesthetic that Yann sought in the project. The EOS 5D Mark IV was used throughout the project as a secondary camera.

WOMAN producer and Canon Ambassador, Yann Arthus-Bertrand said: “WOMAN is a project that gives a voice to women on an unprecedented scale. What struck us most is the incredible resilience of women, their ability to stand up against all odds as if it was ‘in their DNA’ as one of them so aptly put it. By trusting us, these women have also given us a great responsibility: to ensure that their voices are finally heard, so that tomorrow, those who represent half of humanity will never be seen as ‘the weaker sex’ again. I’d like to thank Canon for their ongoing support of this project.”

Richard Shepherd, Pro Product Marketing Senior Manager, at Canon EMEA commented on the film’s re-release: “Storytelling through film has always been a driver for positive change. This landmark project raises awareness of the bias that exists towards women around the world and highlights the need for a gender equal world. We’re proud that Canon’s technology played a part in its production and delighted to support the re-release, which perfectly encapsulates this year’s International Women’s Day theme – ‘Each for Equal’. We encourage everyone who can, to see the magic for themselves.”
